The use of combination forecasting approach and its application to regional market analysis
Jadevicius, Arvydas
Royal Agricultural University http://www.rau.ac.uk/the-rau/academic-staff-profiles/school-of-real-estate-land-management/arvydas-jadevicius
Econometric modelling of the property market has been exercised for several decades. Despite advancements in the field, there is still an element of uncertainty in property market modelling and forecasting. This uncertainty arises due to prevailing modelling practices. On one hand, researchers select the best performing model and disregard alternatives. On the other hand, researchers face a dilemma in deciding which model to choose when competing specifications produce different results. A possible solution is to use the principle of combination forecasting to reduce uncertainty and improve accuracy. Certainly, combination forecasting has its limitations. One criticism is that combination forecasting has predominantly focused on national property markets analysis. To enhance the application of combination forecasting, it would be useful to use it in research on regional markets analysis.

Regional determinants of residential energy expenditures and the principal-agent problem in Austria
Hill, Daniel R.
Vienna University of Economics and Business
The aim of this paper is two-fold: 1) to examine the determinants of residential energy expenditures and compare them on a regional level; and, 2) attempt to identify and measure the effect of possible principal-agent (PA) problems on residential energy efficiency in Austria. The results of this paper are partially based on findings from a master’s thesis, which focused more directly on the PA problem. This paper expands on those results to include regional aspects in energy expenditures. A conditional demand model is regressed on a large number of variables representing housing characteristics, socio-economic factors, occupancy type, and regional characteristics sourced from the EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions dataset. The analysis indicates that significant regional differences exist in the determinants of residential energy expenditures and that PA problems appear to be unimportant to energy efficiency in Austria, even at the regional level. It concludes with some possible explanations as to why this is the case.

Concentration of Resources and Economic Growth
Castells-Quintana, David
Universidad de Barcelona
In this letter I summarise the main results and contributions from my Ph.D. thesis on concentration of resources and economic development. The empirical analysis performed in the thesis, and summarised here, focuses on two mayor world trends in modern economic development, namely increasing agglomeration and rising inequalities within countries. In particular, the impact of both trends on long-run economic growth is studied, and results are discussed in light of relevant policy debate.

This study analyses recent trends (2006-2018) in Port and Douro wine exports and estimates their macroeconomic determinants. The results of the gravity equation reveal that the purchasing power in importing countries is the most important export determinant of Port and Douro wines. Therefore, in order to increase exports, the strategic decision-makers concerned with the industry should pay special attention to the markets in wealthier countries or with a high potential for economic growth, taking into account issues such as market access, adaptation to the market to wine consumption, and regulation.
